Kamran Shahbazi

Kamran Shahbazi (October 2, 1986 – October 2, 2022)

Kamran Shahbazi was a 36-year-old athlete, passionate Zumba dancer, and the sole provider for his family. He lived in Kiamahr, Karaj, and, according to those who knew him, deeply loved his family, his people, and his homeland, Iran. During the nationwide protests of 2022, he chose not to remain silent in the face of injustice.
On September 30, 2022, while returning home from work in the Tehransar district of Tehran, Kamran was reportedly attacked by government security forces. According to published accounts, he was repeatedly beaten with batons, sustaining severe injuries to his head, face, side, and body. The assault caused critical damage to his heart and one of his kidneys. He was transferred to the hospital, where he remained in a coma for two days.
On October 2, 2022, Kamran Shahbazi succumbed to his injuries.
Reports state that security authorities released his body to his family only on the condition that the cause of death be recorded as "cardiac arrest" on the death certificate. Other accounts indicate that the family was also pressured to describe his death as having occurred "at home." His funeral took place on October 3, 2022 at Behesht-e Sekineh Cemetery in Karaj under heavy security, with security personnel present throughout the burial and the family reportedly warned against speaking publicly.
On November 11, 2022, a memorial ceremony marking the fortieth day after his death was held at Behesht-e Sekineh Cemetery. During the ceremony, Kamran's mother publicly stated that her son had been killed by baton blows inflicted by government security forces, despite the official account presented by the authorities.
Kamran Shahbazi is remembered by many as one of the victims of Iran's 2022 nationwide protests—a young man who loved his family, his country, and his people, and whose death has become part of the broader memory of those who lost their lives during the movement for freedom.
