Ramin Fattahi

Ramin Fattahi(March 21, 1978 – October 13, 2022)

Ramin Fattahi, born on March 21, 1978, in Sanandaj, was a Kurdish Iranian citizen who was arrested during the nationwide protests of 2022 and later died in the custody of the Intelligence Department.

On October 13, 2022, while transporting goods with his pickup truck on the road from Sanandaj to Saqqez, Ramin Fattahi was arrested by intelligence forces at the entrance to Saqqez. He was accused of killing a member of the security forces. On the same day, his brother, Varya Fattahi, was arrested after security forces raided their family home. The following day, his sister, Rada Fattahi, was also arrested in Sanandaj.

All three family members were detained without a judicial warrant and without clear information about the charges against them. During their detention, they were denied contact with their family and access to legal counsel. Their family was also subjected to threats and pressure.

Nine days after his arrest, on October 21, 2022, Ramin Fattahi lost his life. According to reports from human rights organizations, the cause of death was severe injuries resulting from torture during interrogation. However, security authorities claimed that he had “committed suicide” in solitary confinement—a claim firmly rejected by his family.

A relative of the family stated that Ramin Fattahi died under torture in the detention center of the Intelligence Department. It was also reported that authorities refused to return his body to the family and buried him secretly at night in Behesht Mohammadi cemetery in Sanandaj without issuing an official death certificate or allowing a forensic examination.

Ramin Fattahi, who worked as a pickup truck driver, was known as a hardworking and kind individual among those who knew him. With the outbreak of protests, he joined demonstrators in opposition to poverty, corruption, and injustice. According to those close to him, his presence in the streets was driven by a sense of responsibility and solidarity with the people, especially women and youth.

Following the news of his death, people gathered at his grave to honor his memory. By singing songs and expressing solidarity, they emphasized their commitment to continue the path for which he lost his life.

According to documented data from human rights organizations, Ramin Fattahi is among the citizens who died under torture after being detained during the 2022 protests in Iran.
