Mahdis Hosseini
Mahdis Hosseini (June 30, 2006 – November 2, 2022)
Mahdis Hosseini was born on June 30, 2006in the city of Amol, Iran. She was passionate about her native Mazandarani language and culture and shared recitations in Mazandarani on her Instagram page. Friends and those who knew her described her as a spirited teenager with a deep love of freedom.
During the early days of Iran's nationwide protests in 2022, according to published reports, Mahdis took part in the demonstrations in Amol on September 21 or 22, 2022. At the age of 16, she was reportedly shot in the leg by security forces. She was taken to a hospital, received initial medical treatment, and later returned home.
According to accounts provided by her family and several human rights sources, after returning home, Mahdis and her family were subjected to repeated threats and intimidation by security agents for approximately twelve days. Phone calls and threatening messages reportedly created constant fear, and her mother tried not to leave her alone, worried that further harm might come to her daughter.
According to these accounts, on November 2, 2022, when Mahdis's mother left for work, security agents allegedly entered their home. When her mother returned, she found Mahdis dead in her room. Reports claim that foam was coming from her mouth and blood from one of her ears when her body was discovered.
Following Mahdis's death, conflicting accounts emerged regarding the cause of her death. Iranian authorities stated that she had died as a result of drug consumption. In contrast, her family, human rights organizations, and several independent media outlets rejected this account, alleging that her mother was coerced into giving a televised confession repeating the official narrative. Reports also claimed that the family was denied an independent autopsy and that Mahdis's body was returned to them for burial only after several days.
Two principal narratives exist regarding the circumstances of Mahdis Hosseini's death. One states that she died from injuries sustained after being shot during the September 2022 protests. The other, advanced by her family and several human rights sources, alleges that after returning home from the hospital and while under continuous surveillance and intimidation, she was killed inside her home. To date, these conflicting accounts have not been independently and conclusively verified.
Regardless of the differing narratives, Mahdis Hosseini's name has become associated with the young people whose deaths during the 2022 protests remain the subject of unresolved questions, controversy, and ongoing calls for truth and accountability. Her brief life, filled with the hopes and aspirations of youth, came to an end during one of the most turbulent periods in contemporary Iranian history, and her memory continues to endure in accounts of those events.
